Coach Davey Whitney Sr., affectionately known as “The Wiz,” was a legendary figure in college basketball and one of the most respected coaches in the history of the game. Known for his firm discipline, high standards, and unwavering dedication to developing both athletes and leaders, Coach Whitney left a legacy that continues to inspire generations.

Early Life and Playing Career

Whitney was born January 8, 1930, in Lexington, Kentucky. Before becoming a celebrated coach, he was an outstanding athlete himself, excelling in basketball and baseball at Kentucky State College (now Kentucky State University). His success there laid the foundation for what would become a lifelong devotion to sports and education.

Coaching Career

Whitney’s coaching journey began in high school and soon led him to Texas Southern University, before he became a legendary figure at Alcorn State University.

At Alcorn, he transformed the program into a powerhouse. His Braves captured nine SWAC regular-season titles and made history as the first HBCU to win an NCAA Tournament game.

The 1979–80 Braves finished the season ranked #16 nationally, bringing national recognition to Alcorn State and the SWAC.

 

His teams were known for their discipline, tenacity, and teamwork — reflections of the values he instilled both on and off the court.

His motto:

Achievements and Honors

Coach Whitney compiled over 550 career wins — more than 500 at Alcorn State alone — and earned:

 

  • Multiple SWAC Coach of the Year titles

  • First ever Journey Award NCAA

  • SWAC Tournament Trophy named in his honor

In 2010, Alcorn State named its basketball arena the Davey L. Whitney Complex, a lasting tribute to his impact on the university and the HBCU community.
